Aspull were the visitors to Wood Lane on what would prove to be a chastening afternoon for the home side.
A clearly well organised & hard running Aspull side ran absolute riot in the 1st half scoring 7 (seven) tries. The less said about the 1st up tackling, or lack of, the better as it was an absolute horror show.
The 2 well worked Marple tries finished-off powerfully by both King & Brown only helped to underline the poor showing in defence.
Strong words were had at half time but the result and bonus point had long been secured. Salvaging pride & the sniff of a 4 try bonus point were all that was to play for. Thankfully the Home side did wake-up & rallied scoring 2x tries out wide in the left had corner from Mead & Gregg. Both came after building pressure, good quick recycling and simple hands.
The bonus point gained should not detract from the poor 1st half showing and more work needs to be done at training to correct these lapses in concentration. Credit however to Aspull who, especially in the 1st half, played some very fluid attacking rugby.
Massive credit also goes to our 3 props who were playing out of position (or out of era) Longdens 1st team debut at prop, Ashton’s promotion from 2nd to front row & Heard’s meteoric mid-game rise from 3rd team hooker to 1st team Prop - all worthy of special mention. Thanks to all.
MoM; King for his strong running, well taken try & continuous gain-line success.
