Match Report: Marple 2s vs. Stockport 4's – Another Statement Win!
Following last week’s impressive performance, the squad came into this weekend fired up and ready for another physical encounter. With a few first-team injuries, several players were called upon to step up—and they absolutely delivered. Despite the setbacks, the Marple 2's team fielded a strong and determined side.
From the first whistle, Marple 2s came out with real intent against a well-drilled Stockport outfit. The forward pack dominated the contact areas, retaining possession superbly through the first half—never losing a ruck thanks to Julian Regan, Nathan Todd and the rest of the forwards. Defensively, Olly Hope and Harvey Miller led from the front, putting in a tireless shift that kept Stockport’s attack at bay.
Even when reduced to 14 men late in the first half following an alleged high tackle call, Marple dug deep and refused to give an inch. Strong carries from Adam Potts, Ben Kirkham, Will Topham, and Alex Jenner began to turn the tide, and the pressure paid off. First-half tries from Ben Kirkham and a brace from Alex Jenner saw Marple edge ahead at the break, leading 17–10.
Half-Time Score: Marple 17 – Stockport 10
With minimal changes at the interval, the second half resumed at a blistering pace. The opening 15 minutes were a gritty arm-wrestle, with both sides exchanging blows and trading tries. As fatigue set in, discipline wavered on both sides—Marple seeing yellow for a dangerous tackle, with Stockport later suffering the same fate after a high shot.
Despite the intensity, Marple found another gear. Clinical attacking phases saw them stretch the lead to 20–36 with just five minutes remaining. A decisive moment came shortly after: a smart kick through the middle had the Stockport defence scrambling, and as the Marple chaser looked set to score, he was taken down illegally from behind. The referee had no hesitation in awarding a penalty try.
Final Score: Marple 43 – Stockport 20
Man of the Match: Ben Kirkham
That result sees Marple 2s make it two wins from two to kick off what’s shaping up to be a promising season.
Special Mentions:
Huge credit to Craig Bennison and Olly Mills, who stepped up in unfamiliar positions and gave everything for the team.
A shout-out to Adam Potts, who rearranged his work schedule just to make kickoff—what a commitment!
We wish Kevin Melvin a speedy recovery from a clean leg break that happened during the game! He still managed to come back to the club after the hospital visit to show off his war wounds. He says he is out for a few months, while others in the club say "tape it up" and play.
And finally, a heartfelt thank you to Olly Hope, who now heads off to university. We’ll miss his presence on the pitch but look forward to welcoming him back whenever he can return. Best of luck, Olly!
